Will paying off a student loan that has had late payments effect my credit score by reducing my debt to income ratio?

Paying it off won’t necessrily raise it depending on how long you’ve had the account open. Depending on how recent the last late payment was you may want to write a "letter of goodwill" to the company and ask them to remove the derogatory remarks from your credit report. This should help you also if you have credit cards use them for everyday purchases and than pay either the balance in full or 1/2 the balance one month and the other 1/2 the next month I just starting doing this and my score jumped 20 points.
